When is Registration Required?

Registration with the Surveyors Board of Queensland is required

  • to do a cadastral (boundary) survey; or
  • to certify mine plans.

A person providing cadastral surveying services to the public for a fee is required to hold a consulting endorsement. The specific legislative requirements are listed below.

Cadastral Surveying

Section 75 of the Surveyors Act 2003 requires any person carrying out a cadastral survey to be registered and Section 76 places restrictions on conducting a cadastral surveying business.

75 – Carrying out a cadastral survey

  1. A person must not carry out a cadastral survey unless the person is –
    • A cadastral surveyor; or
    • A surveyor, surveying graduate or surveying associate carrying out the survey under the supervision of a cadastral surveyor who, expressly or impliedly, accepts responsibility for the survey’s survey quality.

76 – Carrying on a business providing cadastral surveying services

A person must not carry on a business providing cadastral surveying services unless the person is a consulting cadastral surveyor.

 

Mine Surveying

Section 67 (6) of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 requires the mine surveyor certifying mine plans to be registered with the appropriate mining endorsement.

Section 58 (5) of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 stipulates, that: the accuracy of mine plans must be certified by a person having the competencies for surface and or an underground mine.

 

Engineering Surveying

An engineering surveyor is not required by legislation to be registered with the Surveyors Board of Queensland. However, many engineering surveyors seek an engineering endorsement and registration with the Board as a sign of their professionalism.
